A
letter to Heaven.
Esther Ekwujuru Afolabi
Light a candle for Esther

Esther Ekwujuru Afolabi April 7, 1968 – April 20, 2006
The 10 months we shared as a couple were the happiest
times of my life. She was the perfect wife. She
understands me, absolutely. I walked tall, I have
reason to- I have a wife I loved, who loves me too.
I was so proud. Ive found a woman that amazes me all
the time. My meals warm, my clothes clean. Our little
apartment in Lagos, Nigeria started with a bed and 2
seats, it was fully equipped in 3 months, mostly with
her money.
We didnt prepare for her passing, It happened after a
caesarean delivery, her first. She would have been
thrilled to nurse the baby boy she left me. I loved
her beyond expression, I still do.
She will never be forgotten, She will never be
replaced.
Elizabeth Browning captures my feelings in her poem –
How do I love thee?
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints!---I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!---and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
My consolation is that she is free from worldly strife
and God knows best. I pray she will wait for me when
my time comes.
